This camp gives children a solid foundation for exploring nature safely while giving them tools and activity ideas to better engage their natural nature curiosity.

Our week starts out with a big-group thanksgiving and an orientation to nature-awareness and seeing the world differently. Learning to move slowly and quietly prepares us for sneaking games and getting close to critters. We learn how to make string from a local plant the way natives in some parts of the world still make it - by pounding certain leaves to release strong plant fibers. We learn about tracks by making plaster casts of local animal tracks from a school set and set out to discover some of these tracks ourselves in the surrounding area. We learn and experience making fire the old-old way, with friction and a bow- or hand-drill. We culminate our week and learn how to make an emergency one-person shelter in case we get lost.

Parents are welcome to attend. Older and younger children will be in separate groups and come together at various times during the day and week. During their day camp we will:

·          Play Nature-Based Games

·          Track Animals

·          Make a shelter

·          Make fire the “old way” – by friction

·          Use Field Guides

·          Make plaster casts of animal tracks

·         Make cordage (string) from a local plant

·         Move in a quiet way

·         Learn how to be safe in the outdoors

In this day camp we will share the basics of how to live outdoors. This class is a great way to introduce children to the art and skill of using one’s hands to make tools, create useful everyday-use objects from scratch and to live comfortably in the out-of-doors.

This day-camp is very project-based and we start our week by learning about fire: how and from where to collect wood, how to set up the fire-structure, and how to tend the fire safely. Campers in the older group carve their own bow-drill kit and immediately start learning how to make fire by friction. The younger kid's group takes part in activities that support their skill levels and abilities. Fire becomes a central thread throughout the week as we use it to make bowls, spoons, and clay products. We'll also learn how to make a basket from Tule reeds and explore felting with wool. And there's still time for exploring and discovery during the week.

·          Make a Basket

·          Learn Firemaking

·          Build a shelter

·          Learn Carving and Knife use

·          Weave a Tule-reed mat

·      Work with Clay

·          Carve a Spoon

·          Make a Wooden Bowl

·          Cook with Fire
